The City Museum - a modern museum in the centre of the old town
Since the reopening of the City Museum on 17 November 2007, it has developed into one of the cultural attractions in the beautiful old town of St. Pölten.
In the course of the renovations, the entrance was completely redesigned, both inside and outside, to make it accessible to the disabled. Steel and glass porches gave the museum a modern, sculptural symbol that refers to the building's function. The foyer, café and ticket office were designed by Doris Zichtl and Marcello Hrasko. They continue what already emerged as the new signature of the City Museum when the Art Nouveau section was designed in 2004. In the inner courtyard of the museum, a glass and steel lift was also installed, which blends in perfectly with the historic building structure of the Carmelite Courtyard. The St. Pölten City Museum can thus be visited completely barrier-free.
The baroque inner courtyard of the museum was also redesigned. The planting was reduced, and the character of the courtyard as a "baroque garden" was thus reinforced.
The aim is to increase the use of the courtyard for various events, including concerts and readings.
But it is not only the museum building and its infrastructural facilities that have been massively upgraded; the museum has also been renewed in terms of content. With the new archaeological department, the rich collection of prehistoric and early historical objects as well as exhibits from the "Roman" St. Pölten, another showpiece of the museum can be visited alongside the Art Nouveau department.
In 2008, this redesign and renovation was rewarded with the Museum Quality Seal. The award ceremony took place at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
