In the more than 150 years since public passenger shipping has existed on Lake Wörthersee, the experience of sailing on Lake Wörthersee has been preserved. However, the way such a voyage has changed. At the beginning, Lake Wörthersee shipping was mainly used as a means of transport.
Settlements around Lake Wörthersee were originally connected only by primitive paths. Transporting all kinds of goods by land was almost impossible. Simple wooden rafts with rudder drive were already used to transport goods a few centuries ago. Later these water vehicles were additionally provided with sails. Destination of most sailing trips was the city of Klagenfurt.
The construction of railway lines around the middle of the 19th century opened up undreamt-of opportunities for the population to move around. In addition to the railway lines, traffic on water also flourished. New shipping companies were established, new ships were purchased and the frequencies increased dramatically. In recent decades, the company has therefore become a pure means of excursion transport.
