The Museum of Modern Art Carinthia is an institution of the Province of Carinthia which, in accordance with its educational mandate, is committed to the public, to society, as well as to art, to artists.
The Museum of Modern Art Carinthia is the successor institution to the Carinthian Provincial Gallery, which was reopened in 2003 as the Museum of Modern Art Carinthia after extensive reconstruction of the building, and whose infrastructure, contents and areas of responsibility it has taken over.
The Museum of Modern Art Carinthia, like the former Carinthian State Gallery, is dedicated to the collection, preservation, research, documentation and mediation as well as the general promotion of modern and current contemporary visual art. It is a place of encounter and active engagement with new and latest art trends and tendencies. These are presented in a varied exhibition programme with supplementary scholarly publications and communicated vividly and discursively in a wide-ranging accompanying programme, as well as documented in the art collection through acquisitions.
Both young and established national and international artistic positions are presented in solo and thematic exhibitions on around 1000 m² of state-of-the-art exhibition space. The Burgkapelle art room is also available as a venue for experimental artistic projects and installations. In the arcade of the first floor in the inner courtyard of the castle, objects and sculptures from the collection can be seen in the form of a permanent show. The castle courtyard also offers around 650 m2 of playable terrain in the open air.
