In the originally furnished imperial state rooms and living quarters you will get an insight into how Maria Theresa, Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth, also known as Sisi, once resided.
The former summer residence of the Habsburgs was originally commissioned by Emperor Leopold I at the end of the 17th century from the Baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach as a hunting lodge and redesigned in the Rococo style as Maria Theresa's summer residence almost 50 years later. It was not until the end of the 19th century that Franz Joseph, who was born and died at Schönbrunn, occupied it all year round.
