Schönbrunn Zoo is the oldest zoo in the world. It was founded in 1752 by Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine, Maria Theresa's husband, and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Schönbrunn. It has been named the best zoo in Europe five times in a row (2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2018). Unique breeding successes such as the world's first breeding of the Batagur river turtle and the Winker frogs also made the zoo famous far beyond Austria's borders. Since 2006, more than 2 million visitors from Austria and abroad have come to the zoo every year.
For many species, visitors have the opportunity to experience live feedings and learn many exciting things about the animals. Many interesting details about the animals and the zoo are also told on numerous guided tours. The tours range from backstage tours to family tours to night tours. The zoo's various catering establishments spoil visitors with a wide range of dishes, from small snacks to set menus. A ride on the panorama train also makes a visit to Schönbrunn Zoo a special experience.
